With energy prices here in New Hampshire and Massachusetts rising steadily more and more homeowners are turning to heat pumps or mini split system heat pumps for heating and cooling their homes.

An energy efficient alternative to furnaces or air conditioners, high efficiency heat pumps can provide heating and cooling for as little as one quarter of the cost of conventional heating and cooling systems.

A Mini Split Gives You Flexibility

The two main components of a mini split system are the compressor, located outside, and an indoor air handling unit which supplies conditioned air to individual rooms. A conduit housing the power cable and tubing linking the two unitsĀ  requires only a 3 inch hole in the wall. No ductwork is necessary so energy losses associated with ducts are avoided.

mini-split multi zoneThe flexibility and small size of mini splits makes them an ideal choice for retrofitting, remodeling, new additions, or any room in your home where heating and cooling is required.

One outdoor unit can connect to as many as four indoor air handling units (zones or rooms). And each zone or room has it’s own thermostat allowing you to heat or cool only those rooms that are occupied. That saves energy and money.

You’ll have some interior design flexibility with a mini split. Indoor air handlers can be hung on a wall, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or suspended from the ceiling. The outdoor unit can be as much as 50 feet away from each air handler. And individual remote controls makes it easy to turn the system on or off.

Bigger is Not Better

When it comes to air conditioning, system size along with proper installation are critical. That’s why it’s important to choose a qualified contractor. Howard’s Heating & Cooling is a qualified installer and service technician for mini splits as well as high efficiency heat pumps, and central air conditioning systems. We’ll correctly size each indoor unit and determine the best location for its installation. Incorrectly located air handlers or over-sized systems result in short cycling. That’s an energy waster which would not give you proper temperature or humidity control.
